Blaine & Louise Clyde Retrospective Exhibition

7 August 2008 - 1 February 2009

Blaine P. and Louise Clyde have given remarkable support to the Springville Museum of Art for over 25 years, donating of their resources to enhance the Museum’s collection and build a new wing. In honor of their contributions and on the occasion of Louise’s 90th year, the Springville Museum of Art presents this retrospective exhibition displaying the artwork given to the Museum by them and the extended Clyde family.

Born on 25 July 1916 in Springville, Utah, Blaine Palfreyman Clyde was 12 years old when he started working as a cook’s helper in construction camps of his father’s company, W.W. Clyde Co. He continued working for the family business during the summers and after college graduation for a total of 59 years, retiring as President shortly before his untimely death in 1987.

Louise was born 24 December 1918 in Beaver, Utah where her father was an Agricultural Extension agent, the second in the State of Utah. She learned to work hard at a young age as well, herding sheep, milking cows and helping around the farm. She was the valedictorian of her high school and received a modest scholarship to Utah State University, where she met Blaine.

Louise had a work ethic as strong as Blaine’s, and both were very active in their community. Blaine served as a member of the Springville City Council, while Louise has been active in volunteer work. Blaine and Louise are the parents of five children: Paul (Jeanette), Dianne (Wally), Barbara (John), Wilford (Natalie), and Carl (Heather) who have continued the tradition of service and generosity to the Museum.

In her 90th year Louise remains committed to the mission of the Museum. The Museum thanks her and her family for the extraordinary gifts they have given to this institution and its collection. From majestic landscapes to personal portraits, the over 30 works of art in this exhibition are more than a grouping of meaningful pieces from the Museum’s collection; they also display the significance of a family’s generosity. With this exhibition, the Springville Museum of Art pays tribute to the Blaine and Louise Clyde Family, their friends and relatives.
