What is SWAP? SWAP (the StateWide Art Partnership) is a collective of museum and art educators from across the state. It includes representatives from the Springville Museum of Art, the BYU Museum of Art, the UMFA, and other museums as well as elementary and secondary art teachers from Nebo, Provo and Alpine School Districts. Our programs are funded by the State Office of Education through the POPS (Professional Outreach Programs in the Schools) program of the State Legislature. The Mission of the StateWide Art Partnership is to help establish Visual Art Education as a regular part of the general curriculum in the Utah Schools. Through the various programs of the partnership, teachers can learn to understand and appreciate art in ways that may result in a lifelong commitment to art as a part of their lives. This commitment and resulting enthusiasm can be used to add richness to a curriculum that serves the students and the families in Utah. Every child should know and benefit from their valuable visual art heritage as citizens of this great state.

Packet Page At each Evening for Educators, a packet of lesson plans and visual is made available to the public for a donation of $5. These packets are adaptable to all ages, and include visuals in the form of slides, CDs, or transparencies. Many of these packets are available to download as PDFs below.

Poster and Postcards The SWAP Committee has devised poster sets based on the SMA permanent collection. Each poster has on the back of it biographical information about the artist, information about the artwork, and connections to the State Core. These posters are based on images that are part of the State Core Curriculum. Check your State Core requirements for the grade level you teach to see which posters are most applicable to your class. The posters have been divided into Elementary, Middle, and High School sets. Each poster is available to educators for $5. Poster sets have been distributed to many schools within the state; check your school’s media center or library to see if your school has a poster set. Full sets are available for purchase. Additionally, postcards have been created after the poster sets. These are available for $2.50.

Credit Information Teachers may earn recertification points by attending an Evening for Educators. If a teacher attends five Evenings for Educators in one year and complete the requirements of a field test and return the five Evening for Educator certificates and their field test (along with any necessary materials, ie. Rubrics, examples of student work), the Museum will grant them ONE USOE credit which may (if your district allows) be used for lane changes. That credit is also the equivalent of 18 recertification points.
